“Um Quarto Só Seu” (special edition)

“Um Quarto Só Seu” (A Room of One’s Own) is a special edition of Virginia Woolf’s novel of the same name. This edition focuses on the concepts of “truth” and “fiction”, recurring motifs in Woolf’s writing. The reader is invited to reflect on them through the exploration of typography on tracing and plain paper. This contrast establishes a commentary on the absence of women from historic records, as opposed to their omnipresence in literature.

In this special edition, as we open the book, Virginia Woolf’s writing appears on tracing paper. We read it, while seeing through the page and what is written – this is fiction. Meanwhile, spreads and spreads of plain, empty or occasionally smudged, paper stand in the way of the act of reading and imagining – this is truth. Here, the motifs adressed by Woolf are translated into the book’s design.

“Um Quarto Só Seu (special edition)” fiction/truth spread

«Lies will flow from my lips, but there may perhaps be some truth mixed up with them; it is for you to seek out this truth and to decide whether any part of it is worth keeping», Woolf claims. It is through fiction that we can rethink reality. And it was how Virginia Woolf restored women’s stories in History, and how, by taking the time to read and think her book, she gave them a Room of Their Own.
